At their essence, windows and doors let in light and provide views. But they are
architectural elements that can be artistic statements if used to their full potential.
That said, more is not always better. Light and views need balance with solid walls
to be fully appreciated. Balance bright rooms and dramatic compositions with
sheltered spaces that afford more privacy. Here are a few guidelines:
Think about the function of the room
Kitchens, family rooms and great rooms are often light-filled places. A study or library
may benefit from smaller or fewer windows. The composition of a bedroom may use
different windows or higher placements for letting morning light in as well as
offering privacy.
Work with the quality of light
Maximize rise-and-shine eastern light for a bedroom and make the most of southern
exposure for living areas. Also consider planned seating and gathering areas
for optimal light, view and even privacy.
Consider the possibilities of views from each room
You may want to let as much of a shore view in as possible. Or you may want to more
carefully frame the view to capture a stand of trees or a distant horizon - while
avoiding a neighbour's garage.
